5-Day Sea Kayaking Tour of Isla Espiritu Santo in La Paz, Baja
Not only does Isla Espiritu Santo boast some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is home to incredible wildlife experiences. During this five-day kayaking tour, you’ll have the opportunity to snorkel with friendly sea lions and reef-dwelling fish while being immersed in the breathtaking desert landscapes of Baja.
Your days will be spent kayaking through the tranquil waters that surround the island, with deep coves and stunning beaches to discover. Hike up colorful, cacti-studded arroyos and paddle beneath surreal rock formations, with plenty of time to swim and soak up the natural beauty.
Each evening will be spent at a different campsite on this uninhabited island, allowing you to tread where few others have. With our motorized support boat carrying all of your camping gear and supplies, you’ll experience the pleasure of paddling without heavy gear in tow.
You can combine your kayaking tour with a day trip to snorkel with whale sharks, accompanied by a local guide. La Paz is one of the few places in the world where you can get up close to these immense fish, offering an educational vacation experience you will never forget.
Itinerary
Arrival in La Paz + Evening Orientation Meeting
Fly into La Paz and make your way to your chosen hotel, with the option to arrive a few days early to enjoy the region’s sightseeing and shopping. In the evening, there will be an orientation briefing in the lobby of the 7 Crown Centro hotel where you will have the opportunity to meet your guides and ask any questions about the tour. We can also suggest restaurants where you can dine in the evening and highly recommend a stroll along the waterfront malecon.
Panga Ride to Espiritu Santo Island + Paddling Orientation + Kayak and Camp
Your tour officially begins as you board our shuttle to Espiritu Santo Island and are introduced to the basics of paddling by your guides. They’ll inform you of the necessary safety procedures so you are feeling comfortable and confident as you launch into the water. With our motorized support boat carrying all of your gear, food, and water, we’ll begin paddling to our first campsite. Settle in and enjoy the natural beauty of this paradisiacal setting as your guides prepare a well-earned dinner.
Sea Kayaking + Snorkeling + Hiking + Wildlife Watching and Beach Camping
Over the next few days, you’ll be kayaking for around four hours each day, including plenty of floating rests where you can enjoy the spectacular scenery. You’ll wake each day to freshly brewed coffee and tea as the sun slowly rises, followed by a delicious breakfast prepared by your guides.
We’ll gradually move along the coastline towards a new campsite each afternoon, with leisurely lunches where you’ll have the opportunity to snorkel, relax on the sandy beaches or hike along the island’s trails. Your guides will educate you on Isla Espiritu Santo’s unique geology and the landscapes of the Baja desert that stretch out before you.
After happy hour and a gourmet meal each evening, you’ll be treated to a magical starlit sky and clearly visible constellations, far from any light pollution. If you’re lucky, you may even see the brightly-glowing blue bioluminescence in the water.
Note: If you are on the 4-day kayaking trip, you will return to La Paz on Day 4 after your final paddle and enjoy one last afternoon on the island before heading back to the mainland by boat.
Snorkel with Sea Lions at Los Islotes + Return to LaPaz
After your final breakfast at camp, we’ll board a motorboat for a short trip to see the sea lions at Los Islotes. As this colony is frequently visited by people, they’re not shy with humans snorkeling around them and you shouldn’t be surprised if curious pups approach you to interact.
Our panga will then transport you back to La Paz and the hotel where you can enjoy a refreshing shower before a farewell dinner at a local restaurant (not included in trip cost).
Optional Extension to Snorkel with Whale Sharks
If you’re not ready to fly home just yet, you can extend your stay with a snorkeling excursion to come face-to-face with whale sharks. Whale sharks are known to migrate into the Bay of La Paz between October and April when the shallow waters offer plenty of food for these filter feeds. Holding the title of the world’s largest fish, they can reach lengths of up to 42 feet (13 meters), and meeting these peaceful creatures is a true privilege.
Return Home
After breakfast at the hotel or a local restaurant, it’s time to make your way to the airport for your flight home. If you’re departing from San Jose del Cabo, please ensure you have enough time to take the shuttle from La Paz to Cabo.
